How to use
In case of burns, the burnt area must be washed with cold water for a few minutes (the use of ice is not recommended as it can lead to expansion of the burnt area). After drying the skin, apply a thick layer of the ointment to the affected surface. This layer must stay on the surface for at least 3 to 6 hours. In case the ointment is removed during this period, it should be re-applied. If the soothing effects of the product are required, it should be used three to four times a day.
For nipple fissures, apply after breastfeeding and clean before the next breastfeeding.
Pharmacology and mechanism of action
Zinc oxide has antioxidant properties, playing a protective role against the oxidative and harmful effects of the formed free radicals. Free radicals are the cause of tissue damage in inflammatory conditions such as burns. The probable mechanism of action for zinc is competing with iron and copper over intracellular receptors and preventing the formation of harmful free radicals after an oxidation/reduction, which results in a reduction of oxidative stress. The importance of zinc in wound healing has been approved by researchers. Local administration of zinc reduces necrotic tissue, while increasing epithelialization.
Local use of zinc reduces the amount of necrotic tissue, while accelerating the epithelialization process, resulting in faster wound healing.
Zinc oxide also has antimicrobial effects on bacteria as well as antifungal effects. In addition, zinc oxide is a powerful astringent, the local application of which decreases the edema and capillary permeability caused by inflammation.
Sesame oil contains lignans such as sesamin and sesamolin, which are effective at reducing oxidative damage as well as edema from inflammation.
After entering the layers of skin, camphor reduces pain by affecting sensory end organs. This effect is obtained through the activation of TRP channels, resulting in a reduction of pain signals leading to analgesic (pain relief) effects.
