Clotrimazole 1%

Clotrimazole vaginal (for use in the vagina) is used to treat vaginal candida (yeast) infections.

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. The usual dose of this drug is one applicator for seven consecutive nights, preferably before bedtime. This product can also be used in cases where the fungal infection has spread to the external parts of the genital tract. In this case, it can be used two times per day for seven consecutive days. Apply the product on the affected areas and then wash hands with soap and water.

Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that is used for the treatment of dermal infections caused by various species of pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur. The primary action of clotrimazole is against growing organisms. Clotrimazole is an imidazole derivative which works by inhibiting the growth of individual Candida or fungal cells by altering the permeability of the fungal cell wall. It binds to phospholipids in the cell membrane and inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol and other sterols required for cell membrane production. Clotrimazole may slow fungal growth or result in fungal cell death.

Before using clotrimazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other azole antifungals such as econazole, ketoconazole, or miconazole; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
